SPECIAL PROGRAM IN SPORTS

The Special Program in Sports (SPS) is a program that lays the foundation for a career and/or a support to a career for students with interest, skills and aptitude in Sports.

VISION

To develop student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically. We are dedicated to providing a balanced and comprehensive education that fosters physical fitness, sportsmanship, leadership, and academic excellence. By offering specialized training, state-of-the-art facilities, and strong community partnerships, we aim to empower our students to achieve their full potential in sports and life.

 HISTORY OF SPECIAL PROGRAM IN SPORTS

The program aims to improve the performance of the athletes in sports while  maintaining or advancing their academic performance. This program creates an avenue for the athletes to showcase their skills and improve their performance through a continuous program designed to develop a professional career pathway.

Olongapo City National High School ( OCNHS) is highly motivated to offer a Special Program for Sports that will help not only Olongapo City National High School but also the City of Olongapo to scout and develop potential athletes and prepare them for higher meets while developing a love of learning. OCNHS is highly qualified to offer Special Program in Sports for it is consistently the forefront of sports excellence since its foundation.

In 2002, the clamor for establishing a Special Program in Sports (SPS) was spearheaded by the then Secondary School Head VI Saturnino D. Dumlao, and supported by Mrs. Helen B. Aggabao (Principal IV). The program started with one section in first year ( I-Swimming Zacarias) ,second year ( II-Lawn Tennis -Cantillo ), Third Year (III-Volleyball BEC- Estrella ) and fourth year ( IV- 27 Basketball BEC Silvido). The student athletes were selected through the recommendation of their coaches as the initial batch of 2002 SPS.

INITIAL ACHIEVEMENTS

With this initial batch, the program produced representatives for CLRAA, players for Palarong Pambansa, MILO Little Olympics participants, and international players as well.

PARTICIPATION IN MILO LITTLE OLYMPIC NORTH LUZON

In 2002, Olongapo City National High School, spearheaded by SPS athletes, began to participate in Milo Little Olympic North Luzon in the sports of Athletics, Swimming, Lawn Tennis, Football, Gymnastics, and Sepaktakraw.

ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE

In 2004, two SPS athletes became the forefront of Academic Excellence:

  • Vanessa Arcos, Rank 1 Swimmer in Olongapo City and Region III, became the first-ever Valedictorian of the Basic Education Program.
  • Michael Valencia (First Honorable Mention) topped the graduating class of 2004. This proves that the SPS student-athletes excel not only in sports but also in their academic performances.

Achievements in 2013 ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2013

In 2013, the SPS saw the rise of Taekwondo jins:

  • Janna Dominique T. Oliva and Yolly Lundang, who consistently gave honor to OCNHS, Olongapo City, and Region III. Ms. Oliva became the toast of Taekwondo in Region III because of her dominating performance, a consistent Palarong Pambansa representative with 4 golds, silver, and bronze medals. She is also one of Olongapo City’s Outstanding Athletes of 2014 and a class Valedictorian with a general average of 94.66, besting all valedictorians in OCNHS special programs.
  • In the field of athletics, Clyde Dreferd Supnet became a double gold medalist in the long-distance event.

Holistic Development

SPS paved its way to more opportunities for its students by opening doors to different endeavors. Holistically, the program produced outstanding athletes and also excelled in academics and community leadership, proven by the recipients of the highest award a girl can get in the Girl Scouts Of the Philippines Movement, the Chief Girl Scouts Awardees:

Milestone: SPS Annex

The SPS reached another milestone when Sir Leonardo P. De Guzman – Principal IV, Dr. Olivia G. Cannu (SSHT VI), and Sir Joey C. Tala (SPS Coordinator) led the inauguration of the OCNHS-SPS Annex in Tapinac on December 14, 2014. The program increased to five sections: two in Grade 7, one in Grade 8, one in Grade 9, and one in Fourth Year, gradually becoming two sections per level.
